Description
In the late 1960s a standard design for city busses was conceived. This so-called VÖV-I standard design also served as a base for double deck busses, which are so typical for Berlin. MAN delivered the base, with specialized companies adding the double deck body. This new type was called SD and was first built in 1974. During the next 11 years, about 950 units were put into service, more than of any other type. The very last units were retired in early 2003.
This is the replacement for the earlier Büssing types. Due to the standardization, it is much cheaper to operate than its predecessor, while carrying more passengers at higher speed.
