Description
In East Germany, all major companies had been taken over by the state and production was strictly regulated. During the 1950s, a general production plan for the whole Eastern Block was introduced, which made the Hungarian company Ikarus the sole producer of busses and coaches. The model 66 and its coach variant model 55 were introduced and featured an unusual self-supporting body with a rear engine. Both types were very successful and were in use throughout Eastern Europe.
This type is the first regional type to use a rear engine. It is a good allround model, offering a good top speed and a better capacity than many other models. In addition, it is comparably cheap.
