Description
In order to replace older classes and to get rid of expensive engines, the Bundesbahn opted to go for DMUs for regional services in the early 1970s. They were used in the area of Brunswick and in Franconia, being an everyday sight on many branch lines for decades. In the early 21st century newer types started to replace them, the last units were put out of service in 2010.
This type is more or less a successor of the VT-08 and can be used in similar ways in regional services. Based on the rather low capacity the focus will probably be on branch lines with little passenger demand.

A DMU of class 614 waiting at a station
The BR 614 greatly increases speed in local distance services compared to older types. In the 1970s they wear the same blue-cream livery as just about any other type of the era.
From 1987 on regional trains get a livery with mintgreen and gray, therefore the BR 614 also uses these colors.
After 1997 the livery scheme for regional trains changes to red with white doors. Such a BR 614 is here seen leaving a station.
