In real life

Wikipedia

The Intercity service was introduced already in 1971, being a first-class only service based on TEE trains. In 1979 hourly connections with both first and second class were introduced, providing the fastest and most comfortable ways of railway travel in the 1980s in Germany. In 1987 the liveries changed, without adapting the concepts. The trains connect the biggest cities using the fastest engines. The timetables are coordinated in such a way that exchanging trains at the hubs is easily possible. In the late 1980s the first dedicated high-speed lines were opened, a precursor of what was to come with the ICE services.

DBSetXL 0.82

In the DBSetXL intercity trains are available and can be hauled by various engines (V200, BR 218, BR 103, BR 111, BR 112, BR 120, BR 181). Some of these feature a dining car, which is added automatically if the train is long enough. The dining car has custom characteristics compared to the other cars, see this table.

The V200 probably never hauled such an Intercity train, as it was being retired in 1988, when the livery scheme was being introduced. Nevertheless you can do so in the game, it just is not realistic.

There are still some lines in Germany which are not electrified, e.g. to the island of Sylt. On such lines, the class 218 is used, which can be done in the game as well. This train has a dining car in fourth position.

The class 103 was developed specifically for Intercity services, so it is an obvious choice. In reality, it was slowly phased out in the 1990s and replaced by class 120, as it was not allowed to run on the new high-speed lines due to missing air pressure sealing. This train has a dining car in fourth position.

The class 111 can be used for Intercity services as well, although other types with better top speed might be preferable. A dining car is used here as well.

The class 112 was a rare sight with Intercity trains, as they typically required top speeds of 200 kph, which is only possible with classes 103 and 120. Still, a dining car is available.

Class 120 was introduced as a replacement of class 103 for fast and heavy express trains, making it a logical choice. This train has a dining car in fourth position.

Class 181 had a secure spot with EuroCity trains, the international version of Intercity services, running to France and Luxembourg. Whether there's French cuisine in the dining car may remain a mystery, though. In the game one will probably use the class 120 instead, the topic of different electric systems as in reality just is not present in the game.
