In real life
"F"-train is the designation for "fast long-distance train", which had already been in service in the 1920s and 30s as "FD" or "FDt" trains (the "Hamburg flyer" being one such train). After the war, the services were reinstated in 1950, being operated by DMUs of class VT-08 and standard trains with steam engines of class 01. The coaches were painted in a distinct steel blue color. Later on, newly developed engines such as the V200 (diesel) and E10 (electric) were used for these trains as well.
The trains were the premium service of the Bundesbahn until 1957, when the TEE services started as international passenger service between multiple European countries. Some "F"-trains were upgraded to TEE trains, others were demoted to generic fast trains. The "F"-train services continued within Germany until 1971, when the so-called Intercity services were introduced.

In the game one can create "F"-trains in the corresponding time frame by refitting long-distance coaches, if they are hauled by a fitting engine. There are some caveats to refitting: The train needs to be short enough to not have a dining car, as this will block the refitting. You can still add the dining car manually later if you want to. The refitted coaches have different characteristics compared to the generic long-distance coaches, see this table.
The screenshot shows an "F"-train with a class 01 steam engine, which was an everyday sight in the 1950s. Many lines especially in northern Germany had not yet been electrified, and the new diesel engines were only being put into service.
The V200 diesel engine was developed for fast passenger trains and a typical engine for "F"-trains in northern Germany. This changed during the 1960s when the lines were electrified.
The class E10 (later renumbered to class 110) was the first newly developed express passenger train engine of the Bundesbahn. Of course it was used in "F"-train services.
