Description
This type was a technological marvel: When series production started in 1987, it was the first three-phase current engine in the world. Prototypes had been around since 1979. There was hope that this technological advancement could create a true universal engine to replace all other engine types in the long run. However, that never materialized, mainly due to ongoing technical issues. On the contrary, only 60 units were built, which have all been retired by now.
When being introduced, the engine can be used for Intercity and Interregio trains. Additionally, it can be used for heavy freight trains as well. After the split of the Deutsche Bahn into the departments of passenger and freight traffic, the latter has become rare. The first units were retired in 2016, the last usage for long-distance passenger services was in 2020.
In the game, this type is a jack of all trades, it is good for all kinds of services, but it does not outperform other types anywhere. It is not faster than the class 103 or much more powerful than class 155, especially as speed is not that relevant for freight trains anyhow. It also is somewhat unreliable. So, the player will have to decide how and where to use this engine.

A class 120 hauling an InterRegio train
The BR 120 is colored in the red-cream livery for fast express engines and can be seen here hauling an Intercity train in the early 1980s.
Starting in 1987 the liveries are changed, Intercity services coaches in gray-red, while the engine is changed to red.
Also in 1987 the Interregio services are introduced. While the BR 120 is not the first choice for it - it should first replace the older BR 103 in heavy intercity duties - it can of course be used for these trains.
In 1997 liverys for Intercity trains change again. The BR 120 remains a good fit for these trains until the mid 2010s, when they slowly replaced by newer types.
