Description
The class 218 was created as part of the development program for the V 160-family. This type became the most produced type of that family and the most important diesel engine for general services. It excelled in all kinds of usages, in the early years it even hauled TEE express trains. However, usage in front of local or fast trains was always the most important service it was used for.
After German reunification the engine also saw usage in the East German network, replacing older types there. It was a workhorse until well into the 21st century, only being phased out slowly with the general switching of local services to DMUs. Still, retirement discussions were ongoing since at least 2006, but even almost 20 years later there are still some small niches remaining where the type could not yet be replaced. However, the writing has been on the wall for years now. The last services it is required for are trains towards the island of Sylt and some non-electrified lines in southern Bavaria.
In the game one will probably use the engine exclusively for passenger transportation, it just does not have enough power for heavy freight trains. It also might not be the replacement for the older TEE trains, as one might want to switch to electric traction using class 103. Still, with the comparably high top speed one can create attractive regional services, replacing older steam engines.

A BR 218 with silverling coaches in local service was a common sight for the Bundesbahn of the 1970s.
In 1974 liveries change, with cream-blue being the standard for fast trains.
In 1987 yet another livery scheme is introduced, changing the engine to red and the local coaches to mintgreen-gray.
Also in 1987 a new product category for medium main line services is created, dubbed Interregio. The coaches for these trains are painted in gray-blue.
The highest product category is still the Intercity, which comes in a gray-red livery starting in 1987.
In 1997 the livery for Intercity trains changes again. The BR 218 can still be used, although it is probably unlikely to have any non-electrified lines left at that point of the game.
