By the mid 20th century, special wagons were developed based on the classic generic closed wagons in order to satisfy specific demands. One such group of wagons were the refrigerated wagons, another group were sliding wall wagons. Refrigerated wagons had already been put into an extra class (T for "Thermoswagen") by the DRG in 1943, the UIC later created the class I for them. Sliding wall wagons were defined as special covered wagons, which is class H. Both classes are available in various forms in DBSetXl.

DB refrigerated wagon (1950)

This wagon is the first refrigerated wagon in the set and can only be used to transport goods.

The Bundesbahn ordered a series of two-axle refrigerated wagons in the 1950s, with additional series following in the late 1960s.

Based on the technical characteristics of the wagon in the game, it would probably be classified as TThs.

Usage

The wagon is the one with the highest speed limit at the time of introduction, so it is a great choice for transporting goods. By 1970 there already is a successor with an even higher speed limit.

DB refrigerated wagon (1970)

A second refrigerated wagon is available by 1970. It only differs by the speed limit which is quite high at 140 kph, the highest such limit for freight transportation at that time.

During the 1950s the UIC standardized refrigerated wagons as special closed wagons in class I. The Bundesbahn ordered lots of such wagons in a two-axle version, which probably are the base for the wagon available in the set. It is notable that the UIC standard wagons had a much lower speed limit, though.

Usage

The wagon has an exceptionally high speed limit for 1970, later on other types with similar or even higher speed limits and more capacity become available. By 1980, these other wagons become a better choice for transporting goods.

DB sliding wall wagon (1975)

The sliding wall wagon becomes available in 1975 and is the first special covered wagon of class H. Sliding wall wagons were developed to simplify the loading of closed wagons. The classic closed wagon required lots of manual labor for loading and unloading, a sliding wall wagon can be loaded using a fork lift, speeding up the process significantly. The sliding wall wagons were developed from wagons with sliding roof which allowed loading by crane, which also was an improvement over the regular closed wagons.

UIC standardized sliding wall wagons in a four-axle version, which probably is the exact base model for this wagon in the set. Deutsche Bahn currently operates more than 10000 such wagons in different variants with two and four axles.

The wagon provides multiple graphics to show different loading stages. While running, only the graphics to the right are used, showing closed doors.

Starting in 1997, the wagon comes in white with red lettering. The other characterisics do not change.

Usage

Sliding wall wagons are a great combination of speed limit and loading capacity. They are only surpassed by the tarpaulin wagon which becomes available right before the millennium.
